Basic Principles on the Spiritual Path
The Path of Self-Realization must encompass the two sides of evolution. There is the personal evolution and transpersonal evolution. Healing and Ascension. There is the need for healing our human side as well as awakening our spiritual side.
There is the process of becoming strong as a self, then a process of dissolving as a self. Before one can transcend the mind, one must be at peace with the mind. Before one can live as free spirit, one must embrace the limitations of being human.
Often seekers lean towards one side and either negate or try to bypass work on the other side. This leads to a clear imbalance with either the human lacking spiritual awareness or it leads to the spiritual seeker disconnected from his human sensitivity.
Opening to outer guidance rapidly moves us into awakening to our own inner guidance. And even still, with all the help we offer each other along the way ~ the map is not the terrain. And so it is, that the union of human effort and divine grace is what guides us smoothly through each windy road of life.
Let nothing be undiscovered within,
Be a warrior in your own inner terrain,
Explore every horizon,
Explore every valley,
Explore every deep dark forbidden corner,
Until your are no more afraid to wander anywhere
This would be your freedom.
The Freedom of Response
In the same way beauty is found in our perception ~ freedom, peace, love, and suffering are also found in one’s perception. The life occurring around you, sometimes just circling around you, sometimes moving forward to make contact, or retreating into the background, life is there to provoke you in every way possible to a higher state of mind, a higher state of being. Standing there, you can move into the swirling winds, by dancing or fumbling, or you may stand in the center and observe, or you may engage fully in the senses and take it all in as a part of your own self, many are the responses we can choose from. What is given to us in life, despite its difficult or simple nature, is given with intelligence. Our work, is to meet with that, with grace, with understanding and an intent to grow from what is reaching out to us. Suffering comes from resistance to what is, Freedom comes from acceptance of what is. Love comes from the full experiencing of what is.
The Divine Presence
There is a divine presence that lives inside you. It is this aspect of divinity that manifests in the center of every being. It is the mysterious presence we sense around us and within us in times of loss and aloneness. It is this which abides quietly in our heart, ever waiting for our notice, ever waiting for our discovery, timelessly present – so ancient, as close as our very being. It is like having traveled countless miles, endless lifetimes winding our way through mountain, river, desert and rain in search for the unseen hand that has been holding ours with every step….
To know the divine, is to begin relating with the divine. It is relating, not to an abstract notion of God, light or the universal, but like to an old and dear friend, a friend like none other, a friend whose love and concern is supreme, a friend who suffers wholly as we suffer. It is this heartfelt presence that comforts us in thought and guides us as our inner voice. It is essence, wisdom and love supreme, the heavenly light of God ~ God himself waiting in the soft of our heart, waiting, waiting and ever waiting without end for our return….
Unconditional faith is keeping the faith even when you have no reason to. It is believing and trusting when you have nothing to believe in, and nothing to trust in. It is to be wise and innocent at the same time.
It is easy to keep the faith and praise the Lord when all things are going our way. But then why do we revoke our faith, the moment our needs do not get met; which is not to even say they are not being met at a higher level, anyway. Why is our faith so cheap, that we return it the instant our dreams are dashed? It was never faith to begin with, it was only a spiritual concept we used to entertain ourselves, and tossed when it no longer did.
Faith like love, is unconditional when it is true. That is to say, even when there is absolutely no reason to keep faith, your faith remains. Even when nothing makes sense, even when no higher reason could possibly explain this terrible chapter in your life, still you have faith that some intelligence is guiding your life towards a greater good. Real faith is to sit back and suspend your judgment as your life flows past the screen of your consciousness. Allowing the wider circumstance to reveal itself, knowing faith cannot be shaken from that height.
The Goal of Consciousness and Relationship Within Consciousness
Consciousness wants to awaken fully to itself. It wants to have a full experience of its wholeness.
We go to sleep at night, sometimes desiring to sleep in deep empty silence, sometimes wanting to experience a story graze the screen of consciousness. The preference is inconsequential. Either consciousness desires a blank slate, or a dynamic dance of images upon itself.
When we decide upon engagement, upon the dance, then the work of consciousness is to explore its every variant thread.
Each person or thing outside the self, is a part of the self projected outward looking back. We meet with that, in order that it might help us to remember, this part of our own self. It engages with us, such that we awaken the part of ourselves, that the other symbolizes. If they are joy, then to be them, we experience joy in their presence. They help us to know what energy to develop within ourselves. Each one is there to remind us what we need to tend to within, until the point we meet with them inside our own selves. Then the dance subsides, and there is just a stillness in meeting.
